What Is a Representative Payee?
A representative payee is a person or organization approved to receive and manage benefits on behalf of someone who needs help managing their money.
In simple terms
When a person receives Social Security or other benefit income, they may need extra support to manage that money. A representative payee receives those funds and uses them on the person's behalf — focused first on essential needs like housing, utilities, and daily living.
A payee may help with

- Paying utilities
- Managing basic living expenses
- Tracking benefit income
- Helping ensure funds are used for the person's needs
